COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Elizabeth River Trail Foundation received a designation as a National Recreation Trail from the U.S. Department of the Interior on Monday — the first such honor in Hampton Roads. The designation will boost regional collaboration, tourism and long-term preservation for Norfolk.  WAVY

CRIME NEWS

  • Angelina Resendiz, a 21-year-old sailor, disappeared from her Naval Station Norfolk barracks on May 29 and her body was confirmed when found behind an elementary school on June 9—authorities now hold another sailor in pretrial confinement with charges pending.  3 WTKR

CULTURE NEWS

  • WHRO-FM will air its one-hour program 'Proud to Be' on Saturday, June 21 at 5 p.m.—a musical celebration of Pride Month that features a mix of modern and classical works reflecting personal identity and creative expression.  WHRO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The board voted unanimously to terminate Superintendent Sharon I. Byrdsong’s contract without cause and named Dr. James Pohl interim superintendent effective immediately—some board members and citizens voiced concerns about the process. The decision comes as Norfolk Public Schools begin preparing a plan to close 10 schools by August—following notice from City Council.  13 News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City of Norfolk issued a $16.5M Storm Water Revenue Bond through the Virginia Clean Water Revolving Loan Fund on May 29—intended to pay for improvements like upgrades to St. Paul’s Blue-Greenway and restoration of local shorelines and wetlands while nearly $2M in principal forgiveness lowers the project's nearly $18.5M cost.  WAVY
  • City leaders in Virginia Beach said that after a May accident blocked Sandbridge Road for 18 hours, they will push ahead with the 1½-mile Nimmo Parkway extension to improve access to Sandbridge— the project has nearly $54 million in funding but has been delayed by environmental review requirements that include a new study and public comments open through June 23. Officials stressed that the new route will ease traffic and enhance safety during peak beach seasons.  WHRO

HEALTH NEWS

  • Teen siblings Morgan Tarrer, 15, and Olivia Tarrer, 19, from Virginia Beach were diagnosed with sickle cell disease at birth, and the condition brings fatigue, pain, and other health issues—data shows that 1 in 365 Black newborns are affected. Olivia, who attends college in New York and studies film, faces challenges with the physical demands of her career—she must manage her health while planning her future.  WAVY
