CRIME NEWS

  • A Chesapeake nurse, Kevin Coolong, lost his license after state regulators found he engaged in non-consensual sexual conduct with sedated female patients at hospitals including Sentara Norfolk General and Sentara Leigh Hospitals — the Virginia Board of Nursing received four complaints that led to his disciplinary action.  WAVY

CULTURE NEWS

  • Phoebus' Victorian Station, a 115-year-old former tearoom, now hosts open-mic nights every first and third Thursday with a focus on quiet, acoustic performances and simple snacks that let the music shine—its owners preserve the historic space and celebrate its musical legacy. The venue will also hold a special Sunday session on Aug. 10 featuring local acts, and it is raising funds for a new sound system with support from Big Pink Music.  WHRO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Norfolk Department of City Planning is hosting a series of open houses for Phase III of the NFK2050 Comprehensive Plan—today from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Jordan-Newby Anchor Branch Library and on June 5, 11 and 18 at the Southside Boys and Girls Club, the Mary D. Pretlow Anchor Branch Library and the YMCA on Granby, where residents can give feedback online or in person throughout the summer.  WAVY
  • On May 29, Norfolk issued a $16,550,305 storm water revenue bond through the Virginia Clean Water Revolving Loan Fund—this bond with a low 0.5% rate and $1,913,127 in principal forgiveness will fund projects like shoreline restoration and system upgrades, repaid only from storm water revenues.  City of Norfolk

HEALTH NEWS

  • Two local HIV/AIDS service groups in Norfolk and Newport News are facing cuts to state grant funds, which have forced staff reassignments and furloughs—causing delays for uninsured patients to begin treatment—and they are asking Norfolk to use local grants to support testing and prevention services. This move comes as essential programs are underfunded amid state funding decisions.  WHRO
