  • Norfolk Parks and Recreation released the Summer 2025 Good Times Course Guide on May 27, offering a range of activities such as aquatics, athletics, music and dance, visual arts, fitness and wellness, senior programs, special events and therapeutic recreation — with limited printed copies available at community centers the week of June 2 and the Fall guide set for late August.  City of Norfolk

CRIME NEWS

  • Residents in Norfolk have received text messages promising high daily earnings for simple work—experts at the Better Business Bureau warn that these offers are scams and advise deleting the messages to avoid further targeting.  3 WTKR

  • Portsmouth native Swamp Dogg is having his documentary screened at the Naro Cinema today — he will perform at Perry Pavilion tomorrow during the Virginia Arts Festival to showcase his long music career.  WHRO
  • The MacArthur Memorial in Norfolk will screen Saving Private Ryan on June 6 at 7 p.m. to mark the 81st anniversary of D-Day—Dr. Tim Orr from Old Dominion University will introduce the film and discuss its historical context.  City of Norfolk
  • Today at 9:00 p.m. on WHRO-FM 90.3, Raymond Jones hosts 'A Local Touch: Music with a Virginia Connection' featuring Festival performances by Renee Fleming, Nina Kotova, and Olga Kern. The program previews live concerts in Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and Williamsburg—informing listeners of upcoming shows—and revisits highlights from recent Festival events.  WHRO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A Norfolk youth program is expanding into a $30 million, 10-acre campus at the former Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center site to serve up to 400 teens by July 2027. The new campus—featuring learning houses, athletic fields, art studios, and green spaces—will help break the cycle of poverty by offering free after-school and summer programs.  3 WTKR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials reported on May 27 that the Chesapeake Bay survey showed blue crab numbers declined to 238 million, a near historic low since 1990. Scientists said pollution, changing climate and invasive blue catfish likely contributed to the drop—raising concerns for the bay’s future and its commercial fishery.  WHRO

  • On Friday morning, the U.S. House of Representatives narrowly passed a budget reconciliation bill that would cut SNAP and Medicaid, potentially costing 9.5 million meals each year — local foodbanks say these changes will further strain their services.  WAVY

  • A federal package passed by the House last week proposes cuts to Medicaid that may remove coverage from over 161,000 Virginians. Lawmakers remain divided on the proposed $625 billion funding cut over 10 years— the Senate will review the measure soon.  WHRO
