CULTURE NEWS

  • Radio host Raymond Jones will air 'This Just In' on WHRO-FM this Saturday at 8:00 p.m., where new classical recordings will be featured from performances such as the Aurora Orchestra’s rendition of Mozart’s Symphony No. 41 and a world premiere by Quatuor Diotima—offering fresh takes on familiar masterpieces. The show also includes chamber music by Robert Levin and colleagues to give Norfolk listeners a variety of innovative interpretations.  WHRO

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Rising land costs in the region forced Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads to adjust its affordable housing plans by raising income criteria and seeking more donations while pre-buying lumber to break ground on two houses in Norfolk in June—owner Frank Hruska said the increased property taxes and construction costs are challenging the nonprofit's mission. The group had suspended applications last year due to high land prices and now relies on its construction fund to manage rising expenses.  WHRO

  • Hurricane season starts on May 15 in the Eastern Pacific because warm ocean waters form earlier while the Atlantic season begins on June 1 as a larger area takes longer to warm—official dates based on long-term data help guide monitoring efforts for tropical storms.  13 News Now
  • Vincent Bowhers, restoration coordinator for Lynnhaven River Now, said licensed contractors began removing abandoned boats from Norfolk waterways this week. With nearly $3 million from NOAA’s Marine Debris Program, the nonprofit plans to remove about 100 derelict vessels in Hampton Roads over the next year—helping to reduce navigation hazards and environmental risks.  WHRO

  • Norfolk will host its annual Memorial Day Wreath-Laying Ceremony on May 26 at 2 p.m. at Wisconsin Square, where Major General Thomas D. Crimmins—head of the Joint Forces Staff College—will speak as the city and the Veterans Affairs Advisory Commission honor the sacrifice of service members.  City of Norfolk
  • On Monday, Governor Glenn Youngkin issued Executive Order 48 to help Virginia public schools and colleges prevent antisemitism — the order directs state agencies to develop tools for tracking bias and requires school lessons to include Judaism, Jewish history and Holocaust awareness.  WAVY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Sentara Health educator Betsy Carroll said former President Biden’s diagnosis with aggressive prostate cancer has renewed calls for early PSA testing to help men catch the disease sooner. She said local community screenings will begin on June 21st — encouraging men to talk with their doctors before symptoms worsen.  13 News Now
