- ➤ WHRO Public Media hired three new reporters on Tuesday, May 19, raising its team to 18 journalists. The additions include an education reporter and a general assignment reporter returning home, strengthening local coverage + investigative reporting. WHRO
- ➤ Virginia Beach Lifesaving Service is preparing for Memorial Day weekend along the oceanfront. The service will station 50 lifeguards from Croatan to the Resort Area & North End to assist swimmers as lifeguard stands have been moved closer to the boardwalk because of a narrower beach. 3 WTKR

- ➤ The 22nd annual Patriotic Festival runs Friday through Sunday featuring top country acts Zach Top, Brooks & Dunn, and Red Clay Strays at Scope and the plaza. The event honors the military daily from 3 to 9 p.m., with samplings, giveaways, and a dog demo. WHRO
- ➤ This Saturday, Puccini’s Turandot airs live from the Met at 1 p.m. on WHRO-FM 90.3. The show stars Anna Pirozzi and Brian Jagde with historic leadership by conductor (Oksana Lyniv), the first Ukrainian to lead a production at the Met. WHRO

- ➤ Gov. Abigail Spanberger signed a new law yesterday at Highland Springs High School to join the Interstate Teacher Mobility Compact — a plan to ease licensing barriers for out-of-state teachers — as local schools work to fill nearly 800 vacancies. WHRO
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ NOAA scientists are tracking red drum and striped bass with underwater microphones to study how warmer waters and extreme weather affect fish behavior in the Chesapeake Bay. The three-year research, which began last year, will resume in six months with another equipment run. WHRO

- ➤ At Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, two nurses are using costumes and coffee to teach staff and visitors how to recognize stroke signs using the BE FAST (balance, eyes, face, arms, speech, time) method.
