EDUCATION NEWS

  • More than 100 former students will gather today at First Presbyterian Church in Norfolk to honor Paul Lankford, a beloved teacher from Virginia Beach who taught for 40 years and died on May 7 after a battle with dementia. The memorial service and active Facebook tribute underscore his lasting impact on those he taught — a legacy that continues to inspire the community.  WHRO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Norfolk’s CivicLab and Transportation teams joined the Virginia Datathon to create a project that boosts bike safety by using VDOT crash data and turning traffic cameras into real-time counters—this effort helps cyclists choose safer routes. The team, known as Manta Ray, proudly represented Norfolk on a statewide stage.  City of Norfolk
  • Hampton Roads Transit is hosting career fairs in Norfolk and Hampton to fill bus operator trainee and mechanic roles with on-site applications, screenings, and interviews this summer. The events are scheduled for June 6, July 11, Aug. 15, and Sept. 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 509 E. 18th Street in Norfolk + 3400 Victoria Boulevard in Hampton.  WAVY

  • The Norfolk Department of Public Health is offering year-round help with Medicaid and FAMIS applications to ensure eligible residents get needed healthcare coverage—residents are encouraged to apply promptly to remove financial barriers.  WAVY
