Chesapeake planning staff recommended conditions on May 13 for a new Costco at Greenbrier Mall that will replace the vacant Sears building with a gas station and tire center — a project seen as boosting local convenience and property values pending final council approval.

Virginia's Department of Conservation and Recreation purchased nearly 900 acres of Suffolk forestland and will add another 1,000 acres later this year to restore longleaf pine trees and create a wildlife corridor.

Officials will replace many loblolly pines with longleafs using controlled burns and other forestry techniques.
