- ➤ The Friends of Norfolk Public Library will host its 60th Annual Book Review Contest on May 21 at 7 p.m. Mychal Threets, an award-winning librarian + literary ambassador raised with a love for libraries, will be the guest speaker at the free event. City of Norfolk
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Virginia Beach City Council approved a request to seek a referendum on the city's voting system by a 7-4 vote, meaning voters may see this issue on their November ballots. The proposal still faces several steps before any charter change can be made—if voters support it, lawmakers must then introduce legislation for the change. 13 News Now
- ➤ Norfolk approved a Mayor’s Commission on Housing that will develop specific action plans for the city’s housing issues following a housing study presented in 2024 + the eight-member panel, led by Councilmen Jeremy McGee and Carlos Clanton, will set detailed strategies for public housing redevelopments and developer requirements. Mayor Kenny Alexander said the commission will also review funding options for future projects after the city repurposed $2 million from an existing fund to support local housing. WHRO
