COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nana & Papa’s Nest, a parrot rescue caring for nearly 60 birds in Wakefield, got notice that its lease will end in August. The nonprofit will raise $400,000 through local fundraising and rely on temporary hosting if it does not secure a new space before August 31.  WHRO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hampton University and other HBCUs launched the Association of HBCU Research Institutions & began a national research coalition today to boost funding and collaboration. The group will host an inaugural symposium to discuss ways to strengthen research capacity for its member institutions.  Hampton Roads Messenger

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Researchers from Old Dominion University placed flags and chalk outlines at Port Norfolk Beach Reflection Walk to show projected marsh retreat from rising sea levels. They marked boundaries for 2040, 2060, 2080 and 2100 + the display warns that coastal squeeze could significantly reduce local wetlands.  WHRO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • East Norfolk residents expressed concern as stalled plans for Military Circle Mall redevelopment continue since its 2023 closure, arguing city leaders have prioritized other areas while omitting promised funding. The City Council will decide on the final budget May 12 — funding so far only covers site maintenance.  13 News Now
