CRIME NEWS

  • On Friday afternoon, Norfolk Police responded around 2 p.m. to a shooting at the 7600 block of Sewells Point Road off E. Little Creek Road—an officer shot a woman who was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.  WAVY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • WAVY News 10 highlighted USS Arlington — an amphibious transport dock named for Arlington County that returned to its pier after an 18-month shipyard period — and its crew is now training for new missions at Naval Station Norfolk. Capt. Ian Scaliatine explained the ship carries Marines to key spots, and visitors onboard were greeted by its mascot Arly the Eagle.  WAVY

HEALTH NEWS

  • All major health systems and public health officials will launch a campaign to combat syphilis on Tuesday, April 29 at 3 p.m. at the Webb Center on ODU’s campus — the effort aims to reduce rising cases and prevent congenital infections in newborns.  WAVY
  • Doctors in Norfolk report a rise in strokes among young patients — some as young as 8 — linked to high stress and poor health factors like high blood pressure and cholesterol. Dr. John Agola of Sentara Health said strokes in patients aged 18 to 44 have increased about 10 to 15 percent over the past 10 to 15 years, and he noted that warning signs include numbness, blurred vision, and slurred speech.  WAVY
