ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Serious injuries were reported in a three-vehicle crash on Lankford Hwy on Friday at 2:40 p.m.—a dark gray SUV hydroplaned across the median and struck two vehicles, sending injured passengers to Norfolk and Virginia Beach hospitals. WAVY
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Education advocates and lawmakers in Virginia fear that proposed changes by the U.S. Department of Education to student aid programs will hurt students who rely on Public Service Loan Forgiveness and income-based repayment plans. The agency will hold an in-person meeting on April 29 and a virtual hearing on May 1—public comments are due by May 5. WHRO
- ➤ The federal government canceled a five-year $8.5 million teacher residency grant meant to support 200 aspiring teachers in partnership with Norfolk State University and the Isle of Wight School Board—only $2.1 million was used before the cancellation. Local school districts now face lost benefits including reduced tuition and a $10,000 yearly stipend, and planned orientation sessions and classes have been disrupted—three school divisions have already appealed the decision. - ➤ Norfolk officials and Keep Norfolk Beautiful will host Live Green Norfolk on May 3 at Lafayette Park, where free eco friendly workshops, a kids eco zone, sustainability panels and a community art project will promote a more sustainable way of living — the first free event of its kind. - ➤ Norfolk Botanical Garden has been nominated for USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Award for Best Butterfly Garden in the U.S.—its 2.5-acre Bristow Butterfly Garden supports native butterflies and moths—and it will open a new permanent Butterfly House in mid-June that offers an immersive, educational experience for visitors. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Today, doctor Darcy Spurgeon at Riverside Primary Kiln Creek says many residents with itchy eyes, runny noses and cough are likely facing seasonal allergies caused by the recent yellow dusting, and she recommends trying over-the-counter saline, steroid spray or antihistamines for relief. Spurgeon advises residents to seek professional care if symptoms persist for more than three days—especially if they disrupt sleep or breathing. 13 News Now
