- ➤ Norfolk’s Freemason Abbey Restaurant closed indefinitely on Sunday—its unforeseen structural maintenance forced the shutdown and left staff temporarily unemployed. The restaurant will post updates on Facebook and its website. 13 News Now
- ➤ On Sunday, the iconic downtown restaurant Freemason Abbey posted on Facebook that it would be closed for the foreseeable future due to needed structural maintenance—supporters left memories and well wishes online. The restaurant, housed in a building once a church built in 1873 and opened as a restaurant in 1989 at the corner of Freemason and Boush, has long been a local landmark. 3 WTKR
- ➤ New Horizon Bank opened its first Hampton Roads office at 321 E. Main St. in Norfolk’s Icon building last August (2,192-square-foot space with a vault and drawers that can switch to a branch). Regional president Terri Ruby said the bank (founded in 2009 and holding $203 million in assets) has already made steady progress with local businesses and serves as the official bank for the Norfolk Admirals. - ➤ Breeden Construction announced the completion of Aspire at Church Street—an affordable 85-unit apartment building in Norfolk that cost $18.2 million and began in January 2023. The four-story building spans 2.2 acres and has one- to three-bedroom units with some balconies. The Virginian-Pilot
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Police said a woman was seriously injured after a stabbing on the 900 block of Tunstall Ave just before midnight — she was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and a suspect was taken into custody. WAVY
- ➤ A 16-year-old was arrested on April 10 and charged with second-degree murder, robbery, and use of a firearm in connection with the Jan. 5 fatal shooting of 20-year-old Isaiah T. Dukes on the 900 block of Goochland St., and he is held at the Norfolk Detention Center. WAVY
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares joined attorneys general from 27 states and Guam in urging the federal government to stop illegal Chinese e-cigarettes from being marketed to kids. The coalition calls for a task force to seize these products + increase penalties for trafficking them. 13 News Now
