- ➤ On March 27, the GEICO Philanthropic Foundation partnered with nonprofit Shoes That Fit to donate 495 new pairs of athletic shoes to students at Richard Bowling Elementary School in Norfolk. GEICO employees, volunteers, and city leaders—Virginia State Senator Angelia Williams Graves, Norfolk City Treasurer Daun Hester, and City Council members—helped distribute the shoes. WAVY
- ➤ The Norfolk SPCA rescued 13 dogs on Wednesday — including a mother with 10 puppies and two more puppies. Many of the dogs were available for adoption on Thursday, April 3 — and the agency asked for foster homes for two puppies aged 7 weeks and three kittens aged 4 days. WAVY

- ➤ Old Dominion University and Town Center Cold Pressed released Monarch Morning Roast — a balanced dark roast made from Indonesian Sumatra and Colombian beans — which supports student scholarships. - ➤ The 49th annual Norfolk Harborfest will be held June 6-8 at Town Point Park and will feature headliners Lettuce, Chase Rice and The Big Payback: A James Brown Tribute. The event will also include a Parade of Sail at noon, a big fireworks display and a drone show—elements set to draw local visitors throughout the festival. WAVY

- ➤ Norfolk is working with AskHRGreen.org and five other Hampton Roads communities to improve curbside recycling in the 23513, 23503, 23502, and 23518 zip codes on Wednesdays and Fridays. Contractor surveyors in safety vests will lift blue bin lids and check for proper items (with an Orange Oops Sticker given for first-time errors and a Red sticker for repeat issues) to guide residents before the next pickup. - ➤ Colorado State University forecast that the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season will be slightly above average with 17 named storms, 9 hurricanes, and 4 major hurricanes and urge Norfolk residents to gather supplies before the season starts on June 1. 13 News Now

- ➤ A government list from the Department of Government Efficiency showed two federal leases in Hampton Roads—the NOAA office at Settlers Landing Road and the Fish and Wildlife Service office at Short Lane—are slated for cancellation as part of efforts to cut costs, while a GAO office in Norfolk was removed from the list. - ➤ First responders and healthcare workers are taking part in a three-day decontamination drill that has over 16 trainees practicing in hazardous material suits.
