COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Thursday marked the final day of Norfolk Fitness and Wellness Center in Ward's Corner as the aging building closed for demolition to prepare for a new $67 million complex. The new facility will include a 25-yard pool with eight lanes, a lazy river, splash pads, gym areas, and a full-service library—construction will begin in about six months and it is expected to open in fall.  3 WTKR

CRIME NEWS

  • A woman—Heather Cummings—was found guilty of second-degree murder for killing her 81-year-old mother at a Norfolk nursing home and her sentencing is set for June 27.  13 News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Perry Glass Studio at the Chrysler Museum of Art reopens today after an 18-month, $30 million upgrade. The space on Grace St.—now bigger with a 190-seat hot shop—will host free events, live glass demonstrations and a gala this weekend.  WHRO
  • The Virginia Zoo in Norfolk will host a sensory friendly morning on March 30 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.—sponsored by Southern Bank, the event will offer both hands-on activities and limited entry sessions every 20 minutes in a calmer setting.  WAVY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Southeastern Public Service Authority is finalizing a long-term contract with Commonwealth Sortation — a partnership with AMP Robotics and Recycling and Disposal Solutions that will use artificial intelligence to increase recycling and cut landfill waste by half. Negotiations will finish later this spring as SPSA works with local governments on extended waste-use agreements to extend the Regional Landfill's life.  WHRO
  • Keep Norfolk Beautiful will host a spring special waste collection event on April 5 from 9 a.m. to noon—residents can drop off hazardous household waste, old electronics, and plastics.  City of Norfolk
