Thursday marked the final day of Norfolk Fitness and Wellness Center in Ward's Corner as the aging building closed for demolition to prepare for a new $67 million complex.

The new facility will include a 25-yard pool with eight lanes, a lazy river, splash pads, gym areas, and a full-service library—construction will begin in about six months and it is expected to open in fall.

Today, the Southeastern Public Service Authority is finalizing a long-term contract with Commonwealth Sortation — a partnership with AMP Robotics and Recycling and Disposal Solutions that will use artificial intelligence to increase recycling and cut landfill waste by half.

Negotiations will finish later this spring as SPSA works with local governments on extended waste-use agreements to extend the Regional Landfill's life.
