COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Norfolk’s Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and Eastern Shore is partnering with Sentara Health and Families of Autism Coming Together to let people with autism volunteer monthly to pack food and learn social and communication skills. CEO Christopher Tan (the food bank head) said the organization lost $300,000 in federal support and may lose over $1.5 million (expected in additional cuts) that will make it harder to serve local residents. 13 News Now
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ State police data shows auto thefts in Norfolk fell nearly 38% in 2024 as only 461 vehicles were stolen compared to 1,239 in 2023—local and federal law enforcement worked together under the HEAT program to stop car theft. 13 News Now
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Middle school students from across the region will compete in the TowneBank Spelling Bee (airing on WHRO TV on April 5 at 2 p.m.) for a chance to advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee. WHRO
- ➤ Norfolk City Council passed a resolution Tuesday asking the school board to give a plan by August 1 to close and combine at least 10 schools—this step follows a 22% drop in student numbers since 2010 and rising costs. The board must start with closing two schools each year before the 2026 to 2027 school year, and the city may cut funding if no plan is submitted. The Virginian-Pilot
