ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A townhouse fire on Sunrise Avenue displaced a Chesapeake family on Wednesday around noon, and firefighters with Norfolk Fire and Rescue brought the blaze under control in about 20 minutes while rescuing the dog from the second floor — the American Red Cross is assisting with temporary housing.  13 News Now

BUSINESS NEWS

  • City officials say the planned Lidl grocery store at the Railyard may not open as construction never began, questioning the company's east coast expansion. Today, the empty lot on Hampton Boulevard remains while many local businesses have already opened + the area continues to grow.  3 WTKR

CULTURE NEWS

  • PBS and WETA released a four-part documentary, Black and Jewish America: An Interwoven History, hosted by Henry Louis Gates, Jr.; it airs on WHRO-TV at 9 p.m. Tuesdays through Feb. 24 with episodes streamable on WHRO+ app. Local leaders recall historic ties & call for renewed gatherings.  WHRO
  • Jamestown Settlement offers free classes tied to its 'Following the Dragon' exhibition on Ming porcelain. Master tea artist Feather Chen will present on tea art on Feb. 7 while artist Mary Swezey leads a seal printing workshop on Feb. 14 for ages 13 or older.  WHRO
  • Entrepreneur and philanthropist Arrington Gavin was a featured guest on Another View on Feb. 5 at 6:45 p.m. He discussed his journey from a strict school grooming policy to launching his own beard and grooming business with host Barbara Hamm Lee.  WHRO
  • WHRV will air Best of Pickin featuring Sam Bush's 2022 album Radio John: Songs of John Hartford today from 10-12 on 89.5. The program will also include bluegrass tracks by Billy Strings and Alison Krauss for a rich mix of Americana music.  WHRO

  • Norfolk State University received the 2026 Model Level Sustained Distinguished Performance Award from the Elizabeth River Project on Thursday, Jan. 29 at Chesapeake Conference Center — the committee recognized its efforts in environmental protection, energy, sustainability, and community service.  Hampton Roads Messenger
